Jon's MENSA Question of the Day
--posted by JRJ on 3/06/2006
Although Jim and Barbara had to buy four presents for various weddings, they found they could not agree on four identical presents. They bought four seperate gifts; and the first one cost $5.00 more than the second. The second was half the cost of the first, plus one-third the cost of the first. The third cost two-thirds of the first. and the last cost double the third. They spent a total of $115. What did each of the four cost?

The gifts cost $30, $25, $20, and $40.
I thought Mensa was tough. There is actually more information provided than is necessary to solve it.
CORRECT (85%) Being able to differentiate needed information from the excess info is what separates the Mensans from the rest...extra info does not thwart us but it might throw off the average above-intelligent person.
