Jon's MENSA Question of the Day

--posted by JRJ on 6/19/2006

You have ten coins totaling $.49. By an odd coincidence, so does your friend Henry with whom you are walking. One of you accidentally loses a coin through a hole in a pocket. What is the chance it is a dime?

I'm fairly confident that the coin configuration is four pennies, three dimes, and three nickles (10 coins equalling $0.49). I don't see why it matters that this other dude has the same coin configuration. I'm tempted to say 3 in 10, but perhaps it would be 6 in 20 or 6 in 10. Sheesh. I'm going with 3 in 10.

How is it both 3 in 10 and 65%? Wouldn't it be 30%?

On the MENSA questions here the percentage given is the percentage of the MENSA test takers that got the questions correct.
