General College will close
--posted by Tony Garcia on 6/10/2005Good. Finally.
University of Minnesota regents today approved a sweeping reorganization that includes the closing of General College, which for more than 70 years has allowed underprepared students access to the state's only public research university.
By a vote of 11 to 1, regents stood behind President Robert Bruininks' strategy to make the university one of the world's top three public research universities within a decade. The only regent to oppose the plan was Steven Hunter, who is newly appointed and who said he had questions that hadn't been answered.
That word, "underprepared", is the key to the whole debate.
Like my friend, Jon, said, "If you're underprepared, then that means you shouldn't be there. Most people don't go sky diving "underprepared", or go scuba diving "underprepared"."
You got that right.
Finally maybe the U can stop the quick descent into mediocrity...and yes, General College was a big part of that.
