Justice O'Connor coming to Minnesota
--posted by Tony Garcia on 5/02/2006I got this e-mail yesterday and thought some people out there might be interested.
All faculty and staff are invited to hear recently retired Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor speak on Tuesday, May 23, at 8 p.m. in Northrop Auditorium. One of the most influential justices in our nation's history, O'Connor will address important issues facing the judiciary and our nation.I doubt, but am unsure, if it is actually limited to only staff and faculty.
Her address is the keynote speech for the University of Minnesota Alumni Association's Annual Celebration.
O'Connor was the first woman confirmed to the U.S. Supreme Court. Nominated in 1981 by then-President Ronald Reagan, she served for more than 24 years, until her retirement in early 2006. O'Connor was often the moderate "swing vote" on an increasingly polarized court. In 2004, Forbes magazine called her the fourth most powerful woman in the United States and the sixth most powerful in the world.
Tickets for the program begin at $30 (plus ticket and handling fees) through the U of M arts ticket office, 612-624-2345.
