Phil Jackson Returning to Coach Lakers

--posted by Tony Garcia on 6/14/2005

It seems that the Lakers will have Phil Jackson as their coach again. This story says, "[s]pokesman John Black said Tuesday the team has rehired Jackson, who was let go by owner Jerry Buss last June 18."

I have long said that Pat Riley and Phil Jackson were overrated (the former moreso than the latter). Who couldn't take charge of the Lakers of the 1980s, the Bulls of the 1990s or the Lakers w/ Shaq & Kobe and win championships? For Riley he went to coach the Knicks and Heat with some rather unspectacular results. (Yes, a glimmer here and there but nothing to write home about and certainly nothing to justify putting him amongst the greatest coaches of the NBA.)

Jackson now gets to prove what he is worth. Was he a beneficiary of great teams or is he that great of a coach?
