February...and it is time to think about baseball

--posted by Tony Garcia on 2/10/2006

I had a baseball simulation league years ago that I ran. I got busy and it died. Now I am looking to start another one up again. Contact me if you are interested.

Here's how it works:
You are the general manager of any major league team. You set the default lineups and pitching rotations, you can handle the minor leagues (or leave that to the system if you would rather), you can propose a trade with other teams. Cut players, draft players or sign them...you are in complete control of the front office.

At regular intervals I will have the computer run 1-2 weeks worth of games. All of the updated box scores, standing, team news, team stats and player stats will then be uploaded. A season can be completed in about 3-4 months.

If you are interested in being an owner please contact me by e-mail (if you have it then use it, if you don't have it you can find it) or by posting a comment here. Teams will be given on a first come first serve basis.

Now for the slightly more technical stuff. The software is Season Ticket Baseball, I believe the year of production was 2001. The players names are fabricated. I will have a team until the league is full after which I will be only the commish. The home page (at least for now) will be at http://baseball.racetotheright.com/league.htm (it is currently uploading and may not be available until about 3AM). Poke around and see which teams you would like to take over. This is continuation of the league before...there are not financial constraints at this time. Any questions about ratings and scales will be answered individually. Finally, there should be a blog for the league forthcoming. The league name: Beginner's Luck Baseball League.

Welcome and good luck.

Heck, I'd be interested in that. Detroit seems pretty good so I'll nab them if they aren't taken

Sounds fun, Tony. I'll take the Cubs!

(The 2005 standings look like the real results for the teams last year. I'm assuming they don't reflect the relative strengths of the simulated teams...)

The Cubs are yours. You are correct that the relative strengths/weaknesses in the simulation are not the same as in real life.

The whole background is that the first season on the computer system was the 2001 season. Those rosters had the ratings and history of the players at the time, but they did not have permission to use the names. So all of the names are changed. I had the computer turn off all of the financials and then conduct a redraft of all of the teams (Major League and 3 minor league levels).

Then after a few seasons there are retirements, drafts, trades, etc...all of that to say: No, the strenghts and weaknesses are independent of real life.

Tony -
If they're not claimed, I'll take the BoSox. The homer in me would pick the Twinkies #2, but I can't resist to play nemesis to the Yankees.
