Brain patient speaks again

--posted by Tony Garcia on 5/04/2005

This is a nice story about the miracles of the human brain. Just when you think one is not functioning BAM there is goes functioning again.

Incredible.

Nearly 9 1/2 years after a firefighter was left brain-damaged and mostly mute during a 1995 roof collapse, he did something that shocked his family and doctors: He asked for his wife.

I have to interrupt here. His wife waited for him? She didn't have 2 other lovers in the meantime and have 2 bastard children with one of those lovers? How wonderful for this guy.

Donald Herbert, who will turn 44 Saturday, was fighting a house fire Dec. 29, 1995, when the roof collapsed, burying him under debris. After going without air for several minutes, Herbert was comatose for 2 1/2 months and has undergone therapy ever since.

Therapy? You mean that thing that Michael Schiavo denied his beloved wife Terri for the last 8 years of her life. It works? And after all of those pull-the-tubers said that therapy was not really necessary, it turns out therapy WORKS.

News accounts in the days and years after his injury describe Herbert as blind and with little, if any, memory. Video shows him receiving physical therapy but apparently unable to communicate and with little awareness of his surroundings.

Hmm, and no one gave up on him despite his condition.

Rose Lynn Sherr, a doctor with New York University Medical Center, said that when patients recover from brain injuries, they usually do so within two or three years. "It's almost unheard of after 10 years," she said, "but sometimes things do happen and people suddenly improve and we don't understand why."

Hmm, and no one gave up on him, pulled his life line, despite the bleak prognosis. Too bad Terri's husband did not want the same for her...he had the authority to just have her killed.

At this point you know the media are just crapping in their pants. They paid blind allegiance to their death-over-life ideology and an innocent woman lost her life because of their slanted and biased. Now they are being shown for the biased murderers frauds that they are.

They try damage control by adding this erroneous final paragraph:

Unlike Terri Schiavo, the Florida woman whose feeding-tube care raised anguished end-of-life ethical discussions, Wallis was never described by doctors as being in a persistent vegetative state.

Her diagnosis came before the acceptance of the classification of being "minimally conscious"...which was around the time of Donald's accident. Had Terri been given due process and been reevaluated any time after her husband took the malpractice money they would have given her the minimally conscious classification. She was in the exact same state as Donald...the only differences were Terri had a spouse that wanted her dead, Donald did not; Terri was not given therapy; Donald was; Terri had doctors misdiagnosis, Donald had a proper diagnosis; Terri had a judge that prefers death over life, Donald did not need a judge.

Unless the wishes are otherwise clearly and explicitly stated a just society will opt for life when there is doubt.
